Change is Inevitable, Fatigue is Not

Lately, Google has seen a surge in fatigue-related searches—questions like “Why am I tired all the time?” and “Why do I feel so bad?” These inquiries reflect a collective sense of exhaustion that many of us are experiencing, along with a persistent search for answers.

While many factors influence how we feel, one common thread unites us all: the global disruption brought on by COVID-19. The events of 2020 dramatically changed how we live, work, and socialize. From simple tasks like grocery shopping to larger shifts in school and work routines, everything was redefined. And just as we started adjusting to a new rhythm—perhaps even enjoying it—things began shifting again, back to something resembling the “old normal.”

Our brains and bodies are wired to seek homeostasis, a state of internal stability. But with constant change and unpredictability, even basic daily tasks can become mentally draining. It’s not just what we do each day—work, parenting, errands—it’s how we do them that has changed. This increased mental processing can quietly sap our energy.

What’s more, when our environment changes, our brain reacts automatically. If a change feels overwhelming or unfamiliar, our fight-or-flight response kicks in—ready to defend us against perceived threats. This response can trigger a surge in cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. While helpful in truly threatening situations, a constant state of activation can flood the body with unnecessary stress, leaving us on edge or emotionally drained. This ongoing strain often manifests as anxiety, depression, sleep issues, irritability, and burnout.

But here’s the good news: We can take back control.

Practical Ways to Reclaim Your Energy

Start with the basics:

  • Don’t skip meals—balanced nutrition helps regulate energy and mood
  • Get consistent, quality sleep
  • Move your body through exercise, walking, or recreational activities

Consistency is powerful, especially when life feels unstable. Whether it’s a hobby, connection with a friend, or volunteering, these grounding activities provide purpose and structure during uncertain times.

There’s also been a noticeable shift in how people seek wellness. More individuals are exploring mindfulness, simplifying routines, and prioritizing intentional living. Many are finding silver linings—like deeper family connections and increased gratitude—even in the midst of change.

Sometimes, giving ourselves permission to slow down is the most productive thing we can do. While we can’t always control life’s curveballs, we can choose how we respond. And if things feel too heavy to handle alone, know this: you are never alone.

You don’t have to navigate this alone.
